Key West is an iconic destination known for its sunshine, clear water, and freedom. You’ll get the feeling of a laid-back tropical destination where anything goes and you won’t even need a passport!
For this reason, a trip to Key West is something that should be on everyone’s bucket list. Whether you stay on the island or visit from another one of the Keys, you’re guaranteed to have a ball here if you follow this list.
TOP 10 THINGS TO DO IN KEY WEST, FL.
1. Have a margarita on Sunset Pier
This is our favorite place to go in Key West. It is located at a prime spot: right near Mallory Square where all of the action happens.
The margaritas, mojitos, and specialty drinks are all fantastic. However, I am always partial to an original Sunset Margarita.
If you’re feeling like switching things up a bit, try the Pineapple Caipirinha. It’s a spin on a staple alcoholic beverage from Brazil and is delectable!
The Sunset Pier bar sits right on the Gulf of Mexico. Go at sunset for incredible views and live entertainment!
2. Rent an electric car
In order to get around the quickest way possible, you’ll need to rent transportation. My family agrees that an electric car is the best way to see Key West.
Unlike mopeds or bikes, 4-6 people can ride together which always makes things more fun. Not to mention that you can stop at a streetside bar and passengers can get a Pina Colada to go!
3. Have brunch at Blue Heaven
…because it literally is Heaven. This place is hands down the best restaurant in Key West.
You will sit outside with chickens running free under your feet. Okay, some people may be a bit freaked out by that, but when you’re in Key West you have to channel your inner Ernest Hemingway.
I recommend the Blue Heaven Benedicts, and of course a Bloody Mary! You can also catch live entertainment most days and nights.
4. Go Parasailing
We have had great experiences with Fury Water Adventures. They usually take about 6 people to a boat and then will send you up two at a time.
Don’t forget your GoPro HERO4 Silver camera. You won’t get these views of the island anywhere else!
5. Eat dinner at Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville
Even though I usually try to steer away from chains when on vacation, there’s something special about eating at the original Margaritaville in Mr. Buffett’s special town.
6. Ride jet skis in the Key West Harbour
You can also do this through Fury Water Adventures. We had a tour guide that took us all over the island, stopping several times to point out interesting sites.
7. Have Key Lime Pie
I recommend the key lime pie at Kermit’s Key West Key Lime Shoppe. I promise you won’t regret it!
8. See a cabaret show at La Te Da
La Te Da is a 21 and over hotel/restaurant/bar. And lucky for you, they also have amazing cabaret performances. If you enjoy good music and all types of performers, this place is for you. You’ll see impersonations of Cher, Tina Turner, Lady Gaga and more. Be sure to check the website for descriptions of shows. You don’t want to be too surprised!
9. Get a picture at the Southernmost Point Buoy
This 9 ft. concrete buoy marks the southernmost tip of the US. It’s located at the end of Whitehead Street. Everyone needs to see this at least once in their lifetime. I swear you might can even spot Cuba! Take a look at the webcam in real time!
10. Have a drink at Sloppy Joe’s
This was Ernest Hemingway’s favorite watering hole in Key West. Stop by Sloppy Joe’s on your cruise down Duval St. to sit and enjoy this classic bar that opened up right after Prohibition ended. Perfect timing if you ask me!
Key West is a charming little place with lots of great places to stay. Marriott and Westin both have hotels on the water with great views.
Check out Hotels.com for more ideas for accommodations. The area around Mallory Square on the waterfront is a great area to eat, stroll around and see entertainment. Finding a hotel near there is definitely recommended.
