Growing your blog’s audience and your e-mail list is important to you as a blogger especially if you eventually want to monetize your blog and try to make a living from it.
Reaching your readers and keeping them interested while providing them with valuable information are the foundation for building your list.
WHY YOU NEED AN E-MAIL LIST
We hear so many times that “the money is in the list.” What that means is that your mailing list is comprised of people who are interested in what you have to say.
They’re the ones who come back to your blog again and again to see what you are writing about and they’re the ones who eventually will trust you enough to make a purchase from you. They’re your loyal fans.
But as much as we hate to admit it, we surely can’t tell what the future may hold, and depending on social media as the only way to get our information out there could be a huge mistake!
The real reason that your email list is so important is because regardless of what happens out there in the big ol’ web, you STILL HAVE YOUR LIST!
Nobody can “change the algorithm,” make new rules or delete your list. If all social media as we know it should suddenly just…disappear…no worries! Your mailing list is still right there. It belongs to YOU.
The people on your list are the ones who will be most likely to support you when you decide to monetize your blog, so you have to keep them happy, fulfilled, and willing to come back…again and again.
So, what do you need to do to grow your business? Simple! You need to grow your LIST!
HOW TO GROW YOUR E-MAIL LIST
The big question is this: How do you get more subscribers and how do you grow that list?
One way to grow your list is to create opt-ins, or incentives, to join your email list. Yes, you can say “hey, sign up for my newsletter” or “subscribe for updates and more info” but in reality, readers want more than that…and they DESERVE to get more than that.
Nobody wants to give out that coveted e-mail address for nothing! They want something special; something that they can really use. Give them something that they will be excited to get.
Creating valuable opt-in ideas will quickly grow your e-mail list.
When you create an opt-in for your blog, it is important to give your readers something of value..something extra that they will find useful and that they NEED.
If they are willing to trade you their name and their email address, then you need to give them something worth that trade. That email address is GOLDEN.
OPT-IN EXAMPLES TO GROW YOUR LIST:
Guides are simple to create and provide an effective way to give your subscribers detailed information on a specific subject. They can be “how-to” instructions or in depth reports on a specific topic.
When creating a guide, just make sure to put all you can into it so that it gives your subscribers valuable content.
Good ideas for a checklist: A checklist could help someone get organized before publishing a post. A checklist could also help with planning an e-book. A checklist is helpful any time that there are many steps to carry out to accomplish a goal.
Workbooks can be created to summarize a topic that you have blogged about.
Present the same information that is in your blog post in a format that encourages the reader to expand their way of thinking about the subject.
Encourage the reader to come up with their own ideas and provide space in the workbook so that they can write down their thoughts on the topic.
Tutorials show the readers exactly how to do something.
They can be created in PDF form or even as a video tutorial. Identify what your audience is interested in first and then create a tutorial to teach just that.
For ideas, ask your list or poll them on what they would like to learn or ask them to tell you something that they are struggling with, then address that issue with a tutorial.
An e-book can be created with any type of helpful information. Make an outline and organize your information neatly and properly formatted, then export it to PDF so that your readers can download it.
6. MINI E-BOOKS
A mini e-book is the same thing as a regular e-book, only shorter. Create your mini e-book in the same way that you would create a regular e-book and export it to PDF.
There are many kinds of printables to offer your subscribers. Charts, planners, motivational printables are all popular with blog readers.
Use your imagination to come up with something that your readers would find helpful.
If you sell courses, e-books, or anything else on your blog, offering coupons to your readers as an opt-in could be a great list-builder for you.
Create discount coupons for specific items that you offer and require an e-mail address from a reader in order to download the coupon code.
Win-win for everyone!
9. RESOURCE LIBRARY
Compile a library of a number of free offerings. Bundle your checklists, worksheets, e-books, etc and offer a password to the library as your content upgrade.
If you choose to do this, be sure to add to your library from time to time to keep it up-to-date and valuable to your readers.
10. COACHING SESSION
Offer your expertise in a coaching session for your subscribers. You could schedule a phone call or Skype for a certain amount of time to help solve a problem or to give input on something that your readers are interested in.
There are many more possibilities for content upgrades. In fact, the options are limitless!
Use your imagination and put yourself into your subscribers’ places. Think about what they may be struggling with and what would help them solve a problem, get organized, or learn something new.
Brainstorm opt-in ideas that will quickly grow your e-mail list.
Then, create that!
Use your expertise to create an attractive, neat, correctly formatted opt-in. When it’s time to start growing your mailing list with the opt-in, I suggest that you consider using ConvertKit as your e-mail manager.
Creating opt-in forms for your content upgrades is so simple to do. Convertkit lets you create sign-up forms to place on your site and it also keeps track of who subscribes and which opt-in they subscribe to.
